PICKS OF THE WEEK! Friday, July 16, 2nd Pick
This week pick... Ah yes... My old faithful standby. In a week of comics I was excited for, but not overly excited for, it’s always nice to return to my favorite comic book series; TMNT. While the past 19 issues with new writer Sophie Campbell have felt very different from the elements that made the first 100 issues so spectacular, I’ve still really enjoyed the series. And, the letter columns of the past two issues has also had some nice discussion on constructive criticism from readers, versus just rudely bashing a book that many people have worked so hard on, and many...

This weeks pick... Without explaining too much (especially about myself), I immediately connected with the main character Vanessa in Beyond the Breach. The story opens with Vanessa abruptly leaving her life behind, after her boyfriend cheats on her with her sister while she took care of her dying mother. So, Vanessa crafts a particularly unique revenge on her boyfriend, and escapes to California for some much needed solitude. Unfortunately, as is often the case, life has other plans. After a bright light, Vanessa crashes her car and wakes up to a scene of carnage. An inter-dimensional breach has resulted in creatures reeking...

2nd Pick... The 10th Anniversary of Skybound is upon us, and the powers that be have graced us with an insanely cool anthology series, entitled Skybound X. Featuring several variant covers, each featuring characters in the different stories within, my personal favorite is the standard “A” cover, featuring Rick Grimes with a lightsaber. Only we probably shouldn’t call it that, or Disney will get mad. At all of us. But yes, the main story, continuing throughout the anthology series, features a Rick Grimes 2000 tale, where by issues end he brands a…laser sword? Wait, Disney owns that name too?...

1st Pick... After the events of Planet-Sized X-Men, I was delighted and my enthusiasm was renewed for where the X line of books could be heading. That promise has been there since House of X/Powers of X two years ago, but I think most would agree that the books have, at times, lost their way. And at the very least, meandered a bit off point. Filled with both highs and lows, the Hickman era has, if nothing else, given us a truly unique and new approach to the X books. So, with that said, the reason I loved X-Men...

Picks this week... Meet Steve Murray. He’s a line cook at a Canadian restaurant in the middle of nowhere, going by the great pseudonym of “Dave Murray.” Steve is also actually the “real” name of comics writer and artist Chip Zdarsky, on the run ever since comic book characters entered the real world (see the first six issues of Crossover), and comic book creators were quickly targeted and killed. Chip Zdarsky is also the writer of this particular comic book, starring Chip Zdarsky, on the run and eventually being helped by the comic book persona of himself. It’s the...
