PICKS OF THE WEEK! Friday, July 16, 1st Pick

This weeks pick...

Without explaining too much (especially about myself), I immediately connected with the main character Vanessa in Beyond the Breach. The story opens with Vanessa abruptly leaving her life behind, after her boyfriend cheats on her with her sister while she took care of her dying mother. So, Vanessa crafts a particularly unique revenge on her boyfriend, and escapes to California for some much needed solitude. Unfortunately, as is often the case, life has other plans.

After a bright light, Vanessa crashes her car and wakes up to a scene of carnage. An inter-dimensional breach has resulted in creatures reeking havoc on the humans nearby. Electronics won’t work, and Vanessa finds herself fighting off creatures, before noticing Dougie, a small boy left alone after his parents were presumably killed. Joined by Kai, a friendly creature from the breach, Vanessa has to sort things out and help protect Dougie before they are killed by the creatures.

A really good, fast paced first issue from writer Ed Brisson and artist Damian Couceiro, that honestly felt like a much needed real breath of fresh air in comics right now. Although I love capes and tights as much as the next person, I’m loving the selection and uniqueness of many of the independent comics lately. Brisson quickly establishes a relatable character, then puts her in danger and makes the story compelling from the first page. I’d highly recommend trying this one out!
