Chicken Devil Published by Aftershock A delightfully weird, oddball joy of a comic, Chicken Devil, from Aftershock Comics, is written by Brian Buccellato and drawn by Hayden Sherman. It feels very much in the vain of ‘90s crime/adult humor movies like Snatch, Trainspotting or Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. As the cover suggests, it’s a weird comic, but honestly endearing from the first few pages. Buccellato’s humor makes the characters immediately interesting and relatable, even in the extreme situations he puts them in. In issue 1, we meet Mitchell Moss, a down on his luck husband, parent and owner of...

Pick this week...   The Last Book You’ll Ever Read. The title alone is immediately thought provoking. The latest from multi-tasking and popular writer Cullen Bunn (who had at least 4 different books drop this week), and artist Leila Leiz, the book focuses on author Olivia Kade. Seems Olivia has written a book called Satyr, denouncing civilization as a lie, and that humanity is simply “housebroken,” playing at the role of being domesticated and well behaved, and is doing so poorly. Olivia further writes that there is a very thin line between our apparent societal obligation of being well mannered,...

Pick this week...   Sometimes, a well illustrated cover can really pull you into a comic book. It can capture your imagination, and make it so you literally cannot stop thinking about it, or what the possibilities are for what’s inside. One such cover, for me anyways, is the new Amazing Fantasy #1. Drawn in the tradition of Fantasy giants like Frazetta and Vallejo, the cover illustration by Kaare Andrews is a beautiful thing to behold. Featuring a long haired, bearded Captain America, riding a flying Lion creature, arrows stuck on his shield and ready to rescue the damsel in...

Avery Aldridge, known as “Double A” to his friends, and from his time in the Army, is walking out of a restaurant when he notices he’s being followed. Cornered in an alley, Avery finds himself answering questions about himself at gunpoint. All the while, the story flashes back and forth to an event in Avery’s past during World War 2. After the pursuer seems intent on shooting Avery in the alley, Avery displays an unexpected and unknown power...

Pick this week...   Everyone’s favorite duo is back! I love Booster Gold and Blue Beetle. Anyone who read the Justice League International run by Giffen and DeMatteis will certainly understand why. They are a wonderful duo, in the classic sense, where Booster… well, he’s kind of a jerk, but man is he a lovable one. He’s cocky, arrogant and always looking for fame and notoriety. Complimenting him is Blue Beetle, the rich, incredibly smart genius who creates new tech for breakfast. Together, they reduce one another to adolescent buffoons' but always get the job done. Even if their methods...
