In the final issue of this future Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles story, Michelangelo, now The Last Ronin, prepares to complete his quest for vengeance against the evil Hiroto, the man responsible for killing his family. Still haunted by visions of his brothers, Mikey feels the weight of the world on his shoulders, as he sets out to right the wrongs of his family’s deaths. Meanwhile, Casey, the daughter of April O’Neil and Casey Jones, is torn between her loyalties to her resistance cell and helping Michelangelo, her new Sensei, complete his work.
Plagued by delays and last minute replacement artists, TMNT: The Last Ronin has taken a really long time to complete a short five issue story. As a lifelong TMNT fan, I was disappointed in the delays, but was still highly invested in (and frequently heartbroken) reading the story. While it had been a slow burn before now, issue five hits hard and fast, ending in a long, knock down, drag out fight between Mikey and Hiroto. If you are a TMNT fan, or just a fan of good storytelling, this series (and this issue in particular) is something you won’t want to miss, as this emotional ending will stick with you for sure.
