What can be said about The Sandman by Neil Gaiman that hasn't already been said? Furthermore, who am I to think I can add anything to that here? Well, all I can start with is to say that The Sandman is a literary masterpiece, and is widely considered to be a classic for a reason. Honestly, The Sandman deserves it's place as one of, if not the most highly regarded example of comics and graphic novels ever produced. It's an example of what comics can be, beyond superheroes and cartoons, and what all comics should honestly aspire to become. It's at once lyrical, whimsical, fantastical, poetic, compelling, and inspiring.
I've read, and re-read, the first issue of The Sandman multiple times now, at different points in my life, and each time I find something new, or pick up on threads and hints at the stories to come. That more than anything is the highest compliment I can give to The Sandman, as a whole and as the first issue collected here; It not only holds up on multiple readings, but honestly gets better, and gives you so much. The story of a group of men ignorantly trying to summon Death, only to accidentally ensnare Dream, and the ripple effects that has on both the mortal world, and the supernatural one, is breathtaking and fascinating to behold. With the positive reception of the new Netflix series, this reprinting/facsimile edition is a welcome addition for any collector, or a chance for newcomers to read this magical tale. I can't give any comic, past or present, any higher recommendation. It's simply amazing.
