Mind's Eye Comics Pick!! -- Superman: Warworld Apocalypse #1
Superman: Warworld Apocalypse #1, DC Comics
Writer: Philip Kennedy Johnson
Art By: Brandon Peterson, Will Conrad, Max Raynor and Miguel Mendonica.
In this oversized concluding chapter of the lengthy Warworld Saga, by writer Philip Kennedy Johnson, basically a year long saga comes to an end. After Superman and The Authority came to Warworld to liberate it's citizens from Mongul, they were brutally defeated and enslaved. However, because it's big blue (aka Superman), he has slowly inspired a revolution that has swept across the planet against Mongul's forces. As this final chapter opens, a depowered Superman faces off in a final battle with Mongul, even as The Authority battles Mongul's forces, the rebellion fights onward, and Steel tries to transform Warworld's red sun into a white sun that could restore Superman's powers and turn the tide of battle.
As a big Superman fan, this concluding chapter of the Warworld Saga was everything I love about the character. As any fan of the character knows, he's almost impossible to hurt, but you can get to him if you go after those he cares about. Which is pretty much everyone. When Mongul kills innocents, it physically hurts Superman, and spurs him into the final battle with Mongul, even without his powers. While personally I felt the Warworld storyline was a little dragged out in parts (taking place for about a year in Action Comics), I did enjoy it overall, and this final installment most especially, as little pieces of the larger narrative all came together nicely. As DC Comics gears to return Superman back to Earth in the upcoming Kal-El Returns storyline, this is a good wrap up to what's been going on and a fun and necessary read to catch up on all things Superman.
