Mind's Eye Comics Pick!! -- Superman #1

Superman #1, DC Comics

Writer: Joshua Williamson

Artist: Jamal Campbell

Here we are at the "Dawn of DC" with one of many number one issues coming out over the next few months, with new status quos for our favorite heroes and villains. Writer Joshua Williamson and Artist Jamal Campbell come together for this new Superman comic, and issue one couldn't have been more fun or perfect. Following events from Action Comics #1050, Lex Luthor has made the world forget that Clark Kent is Superman (undoing the Bendis era reveal), and is once again in prison. Tuned into certain vocal frequencies, Superman can hear Lex constantly talking to him, trying to warn him of a pending threat and the need for them to work together to stop it. Meanwhile, Lex has arranged a monumental gift to Superman, a new Police Chief arrives in Metropolis, Lois Lane settles into her new job as editor in chief of the Daily Planet, and Jimmy Olsen has a girlfriend?!

As a huge fan of the character of Superman, and of writer Joshua Williamson (especially his lengthy Flash run), I was really excited for this new series and the whole new direction of DC Comics, with the "Dawn of DC" initiative. I'm happy to report it exceeded my expectations. This was an incredibly fun first issue. With multiple appearances from Superman family characters and villains, including Livewire, Parasite, Lex Luthor, Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen, Williamson uses these characters to help set up a great new status quo, with fun humor (Lois had a kink for Clark in overalls), a new direction for Lex Luthor (is he actually trying to help? or?), and a fully populated world of characters within Metropolis, adding much needed weight to the periphery of Superman's world. Honestly, at times this felt like a return to the Superman Animated Series from the 1990's, and was just a pure joy to read.
