Mind's Eye Comics Pick!! -- Star Trek #1
Star Trek #1, IDW Publishing
Writers: Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing
Artist: Ramon Rosanas
After three years missing, at the conclusion of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and presumably kidnapped by the Bajoran Prophets, Captain Benjamin Sisko mysteriously returns to Deep Space Nine with a warning. The Prophets have told him a single word, Hephaestus, as a clue as to where to go to prevent something terrible from threatening the galaxy. After being cleared for duty, Sisko asks Captain Picard on the Enterprise for help in finding a ship and crew to join him. Picard agrees, on the condition that Commander Data join him as his First Officer. Joined by Doctor Beverly Crusher, Lt. Tom Paris, and even a surprise crew member from the past, Sisko is given command of the U.S.S. Theseus, an experimental relic of the past. Driven by a set of coordinates to the Hephaestus Nebula, the crew arrive to find answers.
This was a really good issue, and a great setup for the new Trek series. It's not often I get really excited about a comic book, and allow myself to have incredibly high expectations, only to see those expectations both met and vastly exceeded. Star Trek issue 1 from IDW is something I was immediately excited for once it was announced. As a huge fan of Star Trek, and especially of '90s Trek (The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager), I was thrilled to see this happening. A fun mashup of '90s Trek characters, off on a mysterious mission after the mysterious return of "The Sisko" with critical information from The Prophets, crucial to the survival of the galaxy? Sign me up! If you are a fan of Star Trek, you won't want to miss this exciting new chapter!
