Mind's Eye Comics Pick! -- Jurassic League #1
Jurassic League #1, DC Comics
Writer: Juan Gedeon and Daniel Warren Johnson
Artist: Juan Gedeon
Full disclosure, at first glance I thought the idea of a Dinosaur version of the Justice League was kinda dumb, but all it took was one panel, on one page, flipping through this issue to change my mind. Specifically, that one panel was of Black Mantasaurus attacking humans, and it is honestly epic in its coolness. I was immediately sold. And yes, all the characters have fun Dinosaur themed names. Honestly, this issue felt a bit like a Michael Bay movie, or a Fast and Furious film; dumb, loud, simple and yet incredibly fun at the end of the day.
Various Justice League origin stories are retold, if slightly differently in this Dinosaur themed world, but the essence of each character still rings true, even in the guise of monstrous Dinosaurs. We see versions of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, among others, that will ultimately feel familiar to readers, yet the writers are clearly having the time of their lives and give them a fun spin. Is a Dinosaur version of the Justice League the most revolutionary thing to ever happen in comics? No, but it’s a lot of fun and is recommended for anyone looking for an enjoyable time with a comic book.
