Mind's Eye Comics Pick!! -- Fantastic Four #1

Fantastic Four #1, Marvel Comics

Written By: Ryan North

Art By: Iban Coello

The small town of Cedar, Pennsylvania is tucked away from the noise and distractions of the outside world. Time seems to stand still, because, well, time is literally standing still. After Ben Grimm and his wife, Alicia Masters-Grimm, check into a small motel in Cedar, they wake up to realize things are a little out of whack. They quickly realize that the sleepy little town is reliving the same day, over and over in a time loop. Determined to help, being upstanding superhero types, they begin to investigate what caused the time loop and try to fix things.

An unconventional, but welcome first issue from Ryan North and Iban Coello, sees timey wimey stuff and the Thing trying to solve it without Reed Richards. That alone should tell you something isn't right here, but we'll get back to that in a second. An enjoyable time loop premise, and a fun and at time surprisingly emotional story between Ben and Alicia makes for a really good, back to basics issue of Fantastic Four. While I enjoyed Dan Slott's run on FF, it was nice to see a new writer come in with a fresh perspective. And if seeing the Thing solve a time and science problem isn't interesting enough, the tease that things are amiss back in New York with the rest of the team should definitely hook you into this new FF series.
