Mind's Eye Comics Pick!! -- The New Champion of Shazam! #1

The New Champion of Shazam! #1, DC Comics

Written By: Josie Campbell

Art By: Evan "Doc" Shaner

As we get reintroduced to Mary, she admits she's been many things over the years. First, she was an unwanted daughter, a throw away, a runaway, a foster daughter, an older sister, an overachiever, a super-hero, and finally part of a family. After fighting to keep the world safe as Mary Marvel, time and time again, it all came crashing down on her when Billy (Shazam!) trapped himself in the rock of eternity and the rest of the Shazam family lost their powers. Moving on, Mary now goes to attend freshman orientation at her dream college, meeting her cool new roommates and trying to fit in and be normal. Just when she thinks everything is going fine, her roommate's pet bunny, Hoppy, appears in her bag during orientation, imbued with magic from Billy to inform Mary that the world needs her once again, this time as the new champion of Shazam.

Featuring absolutely beautiful artwork by Doc Shaner, the first issue of The New Champion of Shazam is a really fun read. Josie Campbell gives a strong and relatable voice to Mary, and the scenes with Hoppy telling Mary of her new destiny are hilarious, especially how obsessed with carrots and apple slices Hoppy is. The issue builds to a moment when Mary is finally thrust into her role to stop a super-powered criminal, and the moment she transforms into Mary Marvel once again is breathtakingly cool. All around this was a great first issue, featuring a powerful and young, relatable female hero. This was a comic I honestly can't wait to share with my young niece! My only sadness comes from knowing it'll only be four issues. A highly recommended comic!
