Mind's Eye Comics Pick!! -- Superman #1 Facsimile Edition

Superman #1 Facsimile Edition, DC Comics

By: Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster

DC Comics presents a new 2022 Facsimile Edition of Superman #1, from 1939, featuring the first few tales of Superman, outside of Action Comics. Beginning with a recap of Superman’s origin, the amazing modern myth we all know by heart; how when the doomed planet Krypton was about to explode, a scientist placed his infant son in a rocket ship and sent it to Earth. After landing, the infant is found by an elderly couple, the Kent’s, who soon after adopt the infant and teach him to hide his great powers and great strength from the world, but make him promise to one day use them to help humanity. After the Kent’s pass away, their adopted son, Clark Kent, decides the time is right to use his powers to benefit mankind as Superman.

We see Clark’s decision to become a reporter at the Daily Star (later renamed the Daily Bugle), to better keep a beat on the news stories coming in and help where he’s most needed. We see Perry White, known here only as The Editor, and Lois Lane, depicted as a struggling reporter stuck writing sob stories, but still displaying her trademark sass and strength to be later defined. We see Superman fighting for the innocent, revealing plots and helping those in need. The language is both quaint and filled with appropriate for the times terminology. If you’re a fan of Superman, and have never read this first issue from 1939, or just want to revisit it, like I did, then I’d recommend picking this up, both for historical and nostalgic reasons.
