Mind's Eye Comics Pick!! -- DC Pride: Tim Drake Special #1
DC Pride: Tim Drake Special #1, DC Comics
Writer: Meghan Fitzmartin
Artists: Belen Ortega and Alberto Jimenez Alburquerque
Primarily reprinting material from Batman: Urban Legends #4-6, and #10, in addition to new material, the DC Pride: Tim Drake Special focuses on Tim's journey of self discovery and revelation. While working a case, trying to find kidnapped teenagers, Tim reconnects with his old classmate and friend Bernard. While the two are sharing a dinner, and catching up, the kidnapper strikes and takes Bernard. Already distant from his friends, none of whom know how to help Tim until he learns himself what he actually wants, Tim goes it alone to hunt down the kidnapper and rescue Bernard and the other teens, discovering a missing piece of himself along the way. In the aftermath, Tim must find a way to tell his friends and family, even as he still comes to terms with himself.
Having not read the Batman: Urban Legends issues, this was my first read of Tim Drake's coming out as Bisexual. What makes it such as beautiful story is how relatable it is. Tim is clearly struggling with who he is, and feels like a part of him has been missing. He feels stuck trying to be who he was, has been and who he thinks everyone else wants him to be. A sentiment that is relatable to many, especially anyone who has come out within the LGBTQIA+ community. Meghan Fitzmartin manages to write a great story, taking a well known character, adding new layers to them and without taking anything away from the legacy of that character in the process. In fact, it adds to the character's legacy moving forward into the future. As part of the Pride Month publications from DC Comics, I'd highly recommend this special issue, and it does hint at the future for Tim Drake.
