Mind's Eye Comics Pick!! -- DC Horror Presents: Sgt. Rock vs The Army of the Dead #1
DC Horror Presents: Sgt. Rock vs The Army of the Dead #1, DC Comics
Written By: Bruce Campbell
Art By: Eduardo Risso
Just in time for the spooky season, horror icon and writer Bruce Campbell (of the Evil Dead fame) brings us a long overdue Sgt. Rock comic, with the Sarge and Easy Company fighting undead Nazi soldiers during World War 2. The tone is set by page two, when Hitler literally rips off the head of an advisor, after they gave him bad news about the war efforts on both fronts. Displeased with the news, Hitler orders “The Regeneration Plan” to be given top priority, giving him a potentially endless supply of soldiers to combat the Allied forces. As Nazi forces begin implanting the plan, Sgt. Rock and Easy company are pulled off supply lines and tasked with stopping the undead before it can swing the war back in Germany’s favor.
As a huge Sgt. Rock fan, I’ve waited for any Sgt. Rock comic to finally happen. While I’m aware the niche of World War 2 comics has long come and gone, I’ve still held out hope. Yet, in my wildest dreams, I couldn’t have asked for what we’ve been given! Bruce Campbell writing a comic about Sgt. Rock and Easy Company fighting undead Nazis? Yes, please! The concept is pretty basic, but well written, and easy to follow. Any fan of old World War 2 comics or movies will recognize the tropes here; bad guys have a plan, good guys meet to discuss how to stop it, and a small task force sent against overwhelming odds. All the classics are here, and it’s really well done. Between Hitler ripping the dude’s head off, and Easy Company getting to fight Zombie Nazis, and Eduardo Risso’s (of 100 Bullets fame) gorgeous artwork, this was a pure joy to read.
